What were Americans doing in China in the 1920s and 30s? How did an American child come to be born and raised in China? Author Helen Roberts Thomas was “China-born”, the daughter of American Episcopal missionaries. She spent her childhood in a vibrant international community in the Yangtze Valley, barely escaping after the Japanese invaded Shanghai in 1937. Her parents’ friends were educators, missionaries, and doctors as well as technical and military advisors to the Chinese government.
Her memoir tells a story little-known to either Chinese or Americans today, but it is freshly topical in view of America’s reviving interest in China. Thomas mingles history, culture, and politics with a surprising cast of famous people whose paths she crossed. Above all this, however, her narrative is a story of young girl coming of age. “Wo ai Zhongguo!” the author proclaims: I love China!
